In the opening match of the Cricket World Cup, New Zealand avenged the last World Cup final by defeating the defending champion England by 9 wickets thanks to the centuries of Rachin Ravindra and Dion Conway.
Kiwis decided to field after winning the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. The English team scored 282 runs for 9 wickets. The Black Caps crossed the target with 82 balls to spare. Dion Conway scored an unbeaten 152 off 121 balls with the help of 19 fours and three sixes. Player of the match Ravindra scored 96 runs off 123 balls with eleven fours and five sixes on his World Cup debut. In their partnership, 273 runs were scored in 211 balls. Will Young was out for a wicket. Earlier David Mullan and Jonny Bairstow gave England a start of 40 runs, Mullan scored 14 runs and became Matt Henry's wicket. Bairstow was dismissed by Mitchell Santner for 33 runs. Harry Brooke scored 25 off 16 balls while Moeen Ali scored 11 runs at the top. Joe Root added 70 runs for the fifth wicket along with captain Jos Buttler. Buttler returned to the pavilion after scoring 43 runs. Liam Livingston scored 20, Joe Root 77, Chris Woakes 11 and Sam Curran 14. Matt Henry took 3 while Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips took two each. England's Ben Stokes, New Zealand's Kane Williamson and Tim Southee did not participate in the match.
